Coffee in the wind

Thursday, August 12th, 2004

What’s the first thing you pack after your bare neccessities? Right! The coffee maker. It only makes sense - if you are forced to move out of the way of a major hurricane, you want to spend that time in as much comfort as possible. I know I would. And it seems thousands of other agree with me.

So what do you do while waiting out a storm? You peer out the hotel or shelter windows, watching the trees bend with the wind. The rain comes down at first in a mist. Then some sheets. You watch traffic lights a half a block away sway in the wind. The sky becomes all one color - gray.

Then it’s time for coffee. It’s nice, but not like home. No grinder, no special cups. This time, a mug and a spoon make the setting complete.

But, as everything - it’s not forever. After the storm you can go home and pick up the debris that is part of natural cleasing. Kinda cool. After all, you love all that is earth and are excited that things are almost back to normal. And that you are back home again… sipping your coffee the way you have for years, snuggled up in your favorite chair.
